Michael Cohen is under questioning again as former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial resumes. Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger resumed her questioning shortly after Cohen entered court Tuesday. Trump didn’t appear to react to Cohen’s entrance. Instead, he focused on a piece of paper in his hand. Before the jury and Cohen arrived, a sidebar conference was held with the judge at the request of prosecutor Joshua Steinglass. The subject was not clear. Trump was flanked by supporters including the speaker of the House and several potential vice presidential picks as he railed against the trial once again before entering the courthouse.
The United Nations says more than half a million Palestinians have been displaced in recent days by escalating Israeli military operations in both southern and northern Gaza. The United Nations’ agency for Palestinian refugees says around 450,000 Palestinians were driven from the southern Gaza city of Rafah over the past week. The U.N. said Monday that 100,000 people were displaced so far by Israeli evacuation orders in northern Gaza. Israeli forces are battling militants in northern areas despite launching major operations earlier in the war. Palestinian officials say Israeli strikes in central Gaza killed at least 12 people overnight and into Tuesday.

As House Speaker sits in court with Trump, hush money witness Cohen faces bruising cross-examination
Donald Trump is being joined in court at his New York hush money trial by an entourage of Republican supporters including House Speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson is traveling Tuesday with Trump in his motorcade along with North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Reps. Byron Donalds and Cory Mills and former GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy. Their presence as Trump fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen returns to the witness stand is a not-so-subtle show of support meant not just for Trump but also for voters tuning in from home and for the jurors deciding Trump’s fate. Cohen awaits a bruising round of questioning from the ex-president’s lawyers. Trump denies doing anything wrong.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that American military aid on its way to Ukraine will make a “real difference” on the battlefield. The remarks Tuesday came as the top diplomat made an unannounced visit to reassure an ally facing a fierce new Russian offensive. According to open-source monitoring analysts, Moscow’s troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region that includes at least seven villages in recent days. Though most of those villages were already depopulated, thousands of civilians in the area have fled the fighting. Analysts have called this moment one of the most dangerous for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for more air defense systems to protect civilians in the northeast.
The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
A large billboard that collapsed amid raging thunderstorms in Mumbai killed at least 14 people and injured 75 others, reports said on Tuesday. The rains and high winds caused the 100 foot-tall billboard to fall over a gas station in the suburb of Ghatkopar on Monday evening. Officials told PTI that police say the billboard was illegally installed. India has heavy rain and severe floods during the monsoon season, and the deluge often causes extensive damage.
Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.
