The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs face a daunting test in opening their season after CBS unveiled Kansas City’s Week 2 opponent as being the Cincinnati Bengals. The Burrow-led Bengals will travel to play at Kansas City in a late-afternoon outing on Sept. 15. The matchup follows the Chiefs opening the NFL schedule hosting Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5. The league also revealed Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets will open their season Sept. 9 on Monday Night Football at NFC champion San Francisco. Prime Video's Thursday Night Football schedule opens with Miami hosting Buffalo on Sept. 12.

The San Francisco 49ers added depth to their offensive line by signing tackle Chris Hubbard to a one-year, $1.375 million contract, NFL Network reported Tuesday morning. Hubbard, 33, started all nine games in which he played with the Tennessee Titans last season. He has played in 94 career games (58 starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Titans. The 49ers feature 11-time Pro Bowl selection Trent Williams, 35, at left tackle and Colton McKivitz, 27, at right tackle. --Field Level Media

A New York appeals court on Tuesday upheld the gag order in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, finding that Judge Juan M. Merchan “properly determined” that Trump’s public statements “posed a significant threat to the integrity of the testimony of witnesses and potential witnesses in this case as well.” Trump had asked the state’s intermediate appeals court to lift or modify the gag order, which bars him from commenting publicly about jurors, witnesses and others connected to the case, including the judge’s family and prosecutors other than District Attorney Alvin Bragg. In its ruling, a five-judge appeals panel noted that Trump wasn’t claiming that the gag order had infringed on his right to a fair trial.

A New York appeals court has upheld a gag order that bars Donald Trump from making statements against certain people connected to his criminal hush money trial. The court found Tuesday that Judge Juan M. Merchan properly determined that Trump’s public statements posed a significant threat to the integrity of the testimony. The order bars him from commenting publicly about jurors, witnesses and others connected to the case. Those include the judge’s family and prosecutors other than District Attorney Alvin Bragg. A message seeking comment was left with a lawyer for Trump.

Nobel laureate Alice Munro has died. The Canadian literary giant who became one of the world’s most esteemed contemporary authors and one of history’s most honored short story writers was 92. Munro achieved stature rare for an art form traditionally placed beneath the novel. She was the first lifelong Canadian to win the Nobel and the first recipient cited exclusively for short fiction. Munro was little known beyond Canada until her late 30s but became one of the few short story writers to enjoy ongoing commercial success. A spokesperson for publisher Penguin Random House Canada said Munro died Monday at home in Port Hope, Ontario. Munro

Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

The Cannes Film Festival opens Tuesday with the unveiling of Greta Gerwig’s jury and the presentation of an honorary Palme d’Or for Meryl Streep, as the French Riviera spectacular kicks off a potentially volatile 77th edition. A 10-day stream of stars will begin flowing down Cannes’ famous red carpet beginning with the opening night film, “The Second Act,” a French comedy starring Lea Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. Cannes will also premiere George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed “Megalopolis” and anticipated new movies from Paolo Sorrentino, Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and Kevin Costner.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that American military aid on its way to Ukraine will make a “real difference” on the battlefield. The remarks Tuesday came as the top diplomat made an unannounced visit to reassure an ally facing a fierce new Russian offensive. According to open-source monitoring analysts, Moscow’s troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region that includes at least seven villages in recent days. Though most of those villages were already depopulated, thousands of civilians in the area have fled the fighting. Analysts have called this moment one of the most dangerous for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for more air defense systems to protect civilians in the northeast.

The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
