The former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has pleaded not guilty as a formality in a sports betting case. Prosecutors allege Ippei Mizuhara stole nearly $17 million from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. He has agreed to a plea deal on one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a false tax return. But first he entered a not-guilty plea as a formality during his arraignment Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles. Authorities say there was no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling.

The Washington Commanders pared down the quarterbacks room on Tuesday, releasing Jake Fromm. Fromm signed with the Commanders practice squad in October 2022 and spent most of the past two seasons with that group. Fromm started at Georgia from 2017-19 before the Buffalo Bills selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In college, he threw for 8,224 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions but hasn't seen the same success in the NFL. The New York Giants signed him off the practice squad in 2021, and he appeared in three games that season, starting two. Fromm, 25, was 0-2 as a starter and completed 27 of 60 passes (45 percent) for 210 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in his only NFL action. Washington traded starting quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks in March, getting draft picks in return. The Commanders selected Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels of LSU with the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft. They also have veteran quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel and undrafted free agent rookie Sam Hartman on the roster. --Field Level Media

Nobel laureate Alice Munro has died. The Canadian literary giant who became one of the world’s most esteemed contemporary authors and one of history’s most honored short story writers was 92. Munro achieved stature rare for an art form traditionally placed beneath the novel. She was the first lifelong Canadian to win the Nobel and the first recipient cited exclusively for short fiction. Munro was little known beyond Canada until her late 30s but became one of the few short story writers to enjoy ongoing commercial success. A spokesperson for publisher Penguin Random House Canada said Munro died Monday at home in Port Hope, Ontario.

Stocks drifted higher on Wall Street, leaving the market hovering just below the record high it set in late March. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% and is just below its record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 99 points, and the Nasdaq composite was up 0.6%. Several “meme” stocks were racing higher again including GameStop and AMC Entertainment in an echo of the social-media driven frenzy of three years ago. Treasury yields edged lower following a mixed report on wholesale inflation that showed prices remain high, while earlier figures were revised lower.

Beneath intermittent rainy skies, the Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday with the presentation of an honorary Palme d’Or for Meryl Streep and the unveiling of Greta Gerwig’s jury, as the French Riviera spectacular kicked off a potentially volatile 77th edition. A 10-day stream of stars began flowing down the Cannes’ red carpet with the opening night film, “The Second Act,” a French comedy starring Lea Seydoux. The festival’s first lengthy standing ovation went to Streep. After Juliette Binoche introduced her in the opening ceremony, Streep alternatively shook her head, fanned herself and danced while the crowd thunderously cheered. The reception was nearly as rapturous for Gerwig, the first American female filmmaker to serve as Cannes jury president.

Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that American military aid on its way to Ukraine will make a “real difference” on the battlefield. The remarks Tuesday came as the top diplomat made an unannounced visit to reassure an ally facing a fierce new Russian offensive. According to open-source monitoring analysts, Moscow’s troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region that includes at least seven villages in recent days. Though most of those villages were already depopulated, thousands of civilians in the area have fled the fighting. Analysts have called this moment one of the most dangerous for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for more air defense systems to protect civilians in the northeast.

The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
