Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

The United Nations says more than half a million Palestinians have been displaced in recent days by escalating Israeli military operations in both southern and northern Gaza. Aid workers are struggling to distribute dwindling supplies to Palestinians facing catastrophic levels of hunger in makeshift tent camps. Meanwhile, Israelis celebrated Independence Day on Tuesday with barbecues in parks across the country. The normally raucous parties were smaller and quieter this year because of the war in Gaza. Health officials in Gaza say Israel's war against Hamas has killed 35,000 people, most of them women and children.

Stocks edged higher on Wall Street, putting the market a bit closer to the record high it set in late March. The S&P 500 rose 0.2%, adding to its gains for May following a dismal April. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 52 points, and the Nasdaq composite was up 0.5%. Several “meme” stocks were racing higher again including GameStop and AMC Entertainment in a reprise of the social-media driven frenzy of three years ago. Treasury yields edged lower following a mixed report on wholesale inflation that showed prices remain high, while earlier figures were revised lower.

Jurors in Donald Trump's hush money trial have been shown tweets from Trump in 2018 in which he praised his lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen. Prosecutors suggested Tuesday the tweets also pressured Cohen to remain loyal. And Cohen testified that “Trump did not want me to cooperate with government and certainly not to provide information or flip.” The trial then took a break. Trump exited the courtroom without stopping to speak with reporters but flashed a thumbs up as he walked through a courthouse door.

The Cannes Film Festival opens Tuesday with the unveiling of Greta Gerwig’s jury and the presentation of an honorary Palme d’Or for Meryl Streep, as the French Riviera spectacular kicks off a potentially volatile 77th edition. A 10-day stream of stars will begin flowing down Cannes’ famous red carpet beginning with the opening night film, “The Second Act,” a French comedy starring Lea Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. Cannes will also premiere George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed “Megalopolis” and anticipated new movies from Paolo Sorrentino, Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and Kevin Costner.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that American military aid on its way to Ukraine will make a “real difference” on the battlefield. The remarks Tuesday came as the top diplomat made an unannounced visit to reassure an ally facing a fierce new Russian offensive. According to open-source monitoring analysts, Moscow’s troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region that includes at least seven villages in recent days. Though most of those villages were already depopulated, thousands of civilians in the area have fled the fighting. Analysts have called this moment one of the most dangerous for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for more air defense systems to protect civilians in the northeast.

The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
