WEST DES MOINES — Many health risks — like sitting too much, eating unhealthy foods and smoking — can be avoided. Other health threats — like not being able to get certain prescription medicines — are out of our control and can wreak havoc.

The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are proud to announce the 15th Annual Iowa’s Best Burger Contest. Nominations will be taken from Monday, February 12 to Tuesday, March 12.

The 148th Westminster Kennel Club dog show is underway. Monday marked the start of the traditional judging that leads to the best in show prize, to be awarded Tuesday night. Semifinals began Monday night, with an Afghan hound and a shih tzu tapped to advance to the finals. Seven semifinalists will be chosen in all. The 148th Westminster show kicked off Saturday with an agility competition. It was won by a mixed-breed dog for the first time since Westminster added the event in 2014.

Crews have set off a chain of explosives to break down the largest remaining span of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. The demolition Monday marks a major step in freeing the grounded Dali container ship. The span landed on the ship’s bow after the Dali lost power and crashed into one of the bridge’s support columns shortly after leaving Baltimore on March 26. Since then, the ship has been stuck amid the wreckage and Baltimore’s busy port has been closed to most maritime traffic. The controlled demolition will allow the Dali to be refloated and restore traffic through the port.

The star prosecution witness at Donald Trump's hush money trial says Trump was intimately involved with all aspects of a scheme to stifle stories about sex that threatened to torpedo his 2016 campaign. The revelation came Monday from Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen in matter-of-fact testimony that went to the heart of the former president’s trial. Cohen said everything required Trump’s sign-off. In hours of highly anticipated testimony, Cohen placed Trump at the center of the hush money plot. He said the then-candidate had promised to reimburse the lawyer for the money he fronted. He also said Trump was constantly updated about behind-the-scenes efforts to bury stories feared to be harmful to the campaign.

Aid workers are struggling to distribute dwindling food to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by what Israel says is a limited operation in Rafah. The two main crossings near the southern Gaza city have been closed for over a week. The U.N. says 360,000 Palestinians have fled Rafah over the past week, out of 1.3 million who were sheltering there before the operation began. Most had already fled fighting elsewhere. Israel has portrayed Rafah as the last stronghold of the militant group, even as Hamas regroups in some of the most devastated parts of Gaza that Israel had claimed to have cleared.

Fire experts and officials are warning that an intense wildfire could reach a town in western Canada this week. There are forecasts of strong winds that have fueled the out-of-control blaze approaching Fort Nelson in British Columbia. Thousands of people have evacuated. A local official said Monday that emergency crews are preparing for a “last stand” as dozens of remaining residents are urged to leave. The blaze is one of several out-of-control wildfires in western Canada threatening communities in provinces such as Alberta and Manitoba. Drought has made the fires worse.

Ukrainian officials and commanders say Russian troops are locked in intense battles with Ukrainian soldiers in the embattled town of Vovchansk and are pushing ahead with a ground offensive that opened a new front to put pressure on overstretched Ukrainian forces.  Moscow’s renewed northeast offensive, launched late last week, is the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began. By Monday, only 200 to 300 residents remained inside Vovchansk, said Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov, as Russian forces closed in from three sides. By intensifying offensive operations, Russia seeks to stretch Ukraine’s forces thin and forge breakthroughs ahead of the arrival of much-needed new munitions from the U.S.  and European allies, not expected to reach the battlefield for two months.
