Wisconsin-Green Bay plans to wade into new territory when it comes to college coaches and hot takes. According to several reports Tuesday, Green Bay has hired Fox Sports talk show host Doug Gottlieb as head coach and will allow him to remain in the media. Gottlieb, 48, was born in Wisconsin while his father was head coach at the University of Milwaukee, the team that ended Green Bay's season in the Horizon League tournament in March. Gottlieb was a finalist for the vacancy when Green Bay instead handed its coaching position to Sundance Wicks. But Wicks left to rejoin Wyoming following an 18-14 season as head coach of the Phoenix. Gottlieb played college basketball at Oklahoma State after first attending Notre Dame and Golden West College in Southern California. Gottlieb threw his own name in the ring for the Oklahoma State head-coaching job following the firing of Mike Boynton, and discussed his lack of coaching experience with a national radio audience. "I understand anyone's hesitance when you haven't seen me draw up a play. I get it. It's different," Gottlieb said. "But if you want a different result, you have to try a different path. That's life 101." Gottlieb's late father, Bob Gottlieb, was head coach at Milwaukee from 1975-1980. A prominent name in national sports talk radio, Doug Gottlieb has never been a college coach on any level but held coaching positions in international competitions as part of the U.S. staff in 2009 and as head coach in 2017 at the Maccabiah Games. His national roles in broadcasting include his current job with Fox Sports, and previously with CBS, ESPN and ESPN Radio. He graduated in 2000 with most of the Oklahoma State assist records in his name and ranks 11th all-time in NCAA career assists. He played in the United States Basketball League and in pro leagues in Israel, Russia and France. --Field Level Media

The former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has pleaded not guilty as a formality in a sports betting case. Prosecutors allege Ippei Mizuhara stole nearly $17 million from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. He has agreed to a plea deal on one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a false tax return. But first he entered a not-guilty plea as a formality during his arraignment Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles. Authorities say there was no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is seeking to rally the spirits of glum Ukrainians facing a fierce new Russian offensive, assuring them that they are not alone and that billions of dollars in American military aid on its way to the country would make a “real difference” on the battlefield. On an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Blinken told Ukrainian leaders that despite a monthslong delay in U.S. assistance that left them vulnerable to renewed Russian military strikes more weaponry is coming and some has already arrived. He made the case as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to him for more air defense systems to protect civilians.

Beneath intermittent rainy skies, the Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday with the presentation of an honorary Palme d’Or for Meryl Streep and the unveiling of Greta Gerwig’s jury, as the French Riviera spectacular kicked off a potentially volatile 77th edition. A 10-day stream of stars began flowing down the Cannes’ red carpet with the opening night film, “The Second Act,” a French comedy starring Lea Seydoux. The festival’s first lengthy standing ovation went to Streep. After Juliette Binoche introduced her in the opening ceremony, Streep alternatively shook her head, fanned herself and danced while the crowd thunderously cheered. The reception was nearly as rapturous for Gerwig, the first American female filmmaker to serve as Cannes jury president.

Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
