One evening in November 2020, a year into his military service, Peacemaker Azuegbulam’s dream of being a soldier came to an abrupt end. He was among a group of Nigerian soldiers deployed in that country’s counteroffensive against Islamic extremists when an anti-aircraft weapon was fired at them. When he regained consciousness, his life was no longer the same, and his left leg was later amputated. He was given what he called a chance to recover when he joined Nigeria’s team in last year’s Invictus Games and won Africa’s first gold medal at the event founded by Prince Harry to aid in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

Donald Trump’s fixer-turned-foe awaits a bruising round of questioning from the former president’s lawyers after testimony that linked the celebrity client to all aspects of a hush money scheme that prosecutors say was aimed at stifling stories that threatened his 2016 campaign. Michael Cohen returns to the stand Tuesday as the prosecution’s star witness, where a day earlier he delivered matter-of-fact testimony that went to the heart of the former president’s trial. He said, for instance, that Trump had promised to reimburse the money he fronted for the payments and was constantly updated about behind-the-scenes efforts to bury stories feared to be harmful to the campaign.

A lawsuit filed by six members of a University of Wyoming sorority who are challenging the admission of a transgender woman into their local chapter will be argued in an appeals court Tuesday. The case is set to be argued before the three-judge U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. The sorority sisters argue the sorority ignored its own rules by allowing the transgender woman in the local chapter in Laramie, Wyoming. A judge in Wyoming threw out the lawsuit last year, ruling that he could not override how the private, voluntary organization defined a woman and order that she not belong.

A large billboard that collapsed amid raging thunderstorms in Mumbai killed at least 14 people and injured 75 others, reports said on Tuesday. A rescue operation was ongoing Tuesday morning, and authorities told the Press Trust of India news agency that 89 people had been rescued since the incident occurred on Monday evening. The rains and high winds caused the 100 foot-tall billboard to fall over a gas station in the suburb of Ghatkopar on Monday evening. Officials told PTI that police say the billboard was illegally installed. India has heavy rain and severe floods during the monsoon season, and the deluge often causes extensive damage.

Global shares are mixed in muted trading after U.S. shares finished little changed. Investors are waiting for updates on inflation. Shares fell slightly in France and Germany in early trading, while gaining in Britain. U.S. futures were also little changed. Tokyo's benchmark rose, but Chinese markets were flat ahead of an expected announcement by the Biden administration on raising tariffs on imports from China. The U.S. government will release its latest monthly update on consumer inflation this week. Other reports include updates on wholesale prices and sales at U.S. retailers. The U.S. dollar was trading about 156 yen.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced diplomatic mission to reassure Ukraine that it has American support as it struggles to defend against increasingly intense Russian attacks. The two-day visit starting Tuesday comes less than a month after Congress approved a long-delayed foreign assistance package that sets aside $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defense systems. It's Blinken's fourth trip to Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. U.S. officials say Blinken will underscore the Biden administration’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense and long-term security.

The Chinese Foreign Ministery says Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a two-day state visit to China this week. Putin will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit starting on Thurday, it said. The Kremlin said Putin was going on Xi's invitation. China has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry. China is also a major export market for energy supplies that keep the Kremlin’s coffers full. China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would discuss with Putin “cooperation in various fields of bilateral relations ... as well as international and regional issues of common concern.”
