U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Israel on Wednesday to press for a cease-fire deal in the Israel-Hamas war, saying “ the time is now ” and warning that Hamas would bear the blame for any failure to reach an agreement to halt the war in Gaza.
A student protest movement has washed over the country since police first tried to end an encampment at Columbia University in New York nearly two weeks ago. There have been fiery rhetoric and tumultuous arrests on high-profile campuses from New York to Los Angeles. But millions of students across the country have continued with their daily routines of working their way through school, socializing and studying for exams. The protests are demonstrating wide differences among Americans in 2024, even for groups that have tended to unite during divisive times such as the 1960s. Take Boston, the city most identified with American higher education. Students have set up encampments at at least five campuses. But calm has prevailed elsewhere in the area.
Stocks are drifting as Wall Street waits to hear from the Federal Reserve about where interest rates may be heading. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 142 points, and the Nasdaq composite dipped 0.3%. CVS Health, Starbucks, Advanced Micro Devices and Super Micro Computer all tumbled following their profit reports. But the focus is on the Fed, which is expected to keep its main interest rate steady. Chair Jerome Powell could then give some guidance about the chances for a cut to rates later this year. Treasury yields eased after a couple of weaker-than-expected reports on the economy.
Dueling groups of protesters clashed overnight at the University of California, Los Angeles, shoving, kicking and beating each other with sticks after pro-Israel demonstrators tried to pull down barricades surrounding a pro-Palestinian encampment. UCLA canceled classes Wednesday. Late Tuesday, police burst into a Columbia University building occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters and broke up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that police arrested almost 300 protestors at Columbia and City College. Police also cleared an encampment at Tulane University in New Orleans early Wednesday.
Workers and activists around the world are marking May Day with largely peaceful rallies against rising prices and calling for greater rights. Pro-Palestinian sentiments are also on display. Police in Istanbul fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of people who tried to reach the main Taksim square in defiance of a ban. In Paris, some workers set makeshift Olympic rings on fire. In South Korea's capital, thousands of protesters expressed frustration with the government. In Lebanon, people sought the end to a miserable economic crisis. “Tax the rich,” one banner in Germany read. “I want to live, not survive,” read one in France.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with Israeli leaders in his push for a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas to impress on them that “the time is now" for an agreement that would free hostages and bring a pause in the nearly seven months of war. The current round of talks appears to be serious, with Hamas considering a new proposal. But the sides remain far apart on the key issue of whether the war should end as part of an emerging deal. In talks with Blinken, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his determination to carry out an offensive on the southern Gaza town of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.
German tennis legend Boris Becker has been discharged from bankruptcy court in London after a judge found he had done “all that he reasonably could do” to repay his creditors. High Court Judge Nicholas Briggs said in a ruling Wednesday that it would be “perverse” not to end the case. Creditors say Becker still owed about 42 million pounds ($52.5 million) over an unpaid loan of more than 3 million pounds ($3.75 million) on his estate in Mallorca, Spain. Becker served 8 months in a London prison for illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding 2.5 million pounds ($3.1 million) from bankruptcy trustees.
