Tensions are growing on the UCLA campus as law enforcement officers order a large group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators to disperse. The heavy police presence comes as administrators and campus police are facing intense criticism for failing to act quickly to stop an overnight attack on a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus by counter-demonstrators. Supporters of the encampment including other students and alumni are largely staying put on the campus steps as they listen to speakers and engage in chants. Students are gathered again in the encampment after reconstructing barricades. Elsewhere police have dismantled an encampment at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and activists clashed with police at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Authorities say a section of a highway in southern China's Guangdong province has collapsed, killing at least 36 people. The disaster occurred early Wednesday after heavy rains in recent days. A Meizhou city government statement said that 23 cars fell down a slope after a long section of the roadway collapsed. Witnesses told local media they heard a loud noise and saw a hole open up several meters wide behind them after driving past the road section just before it collapsed. Video and photos in local media showed smoke and fire at the scene, with highway rails slanting down into the flames.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with Israeli leaders in his push for a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas to impress on them that “the time is now" for an agreement that would free hostages and bring a pause in the nearly seven months of war. The current round of talks appears to be serious, with Hamas considering a new proposal. But the sides remain far apart on the key issue of whether the war should end as part of an emerging deal. In talks with Blinken, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his determination to carry out an offensive on the southern Gaza town of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.
