Kenta Maeda got his first win for Detroit, allowing four hits over six innings in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals as the Tigers took two of three games in the series. Matt Vierling had three RBIs for the Tigers, who are 31-16 against St. Louis in interleague play. The teams also met in three World Series, with the Cardinals winning in 1934 and 2006, and Detroit taking the title in 1968. Maeda allowed a fourth-inning home run to Willson Contreras that landed in shrubbery above the center-field fence. He struck out five and walked none.

What would you do if you were given an extra day? How would you celebrate those extra moments? Would you start the day with a cup of coffee or a meditative walk watching the sunrise and ending with a great meal and a table full of loved ones at sunset? Would you make time to have lunch with …

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she'll call a vote next week on ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson. The Georgia Republican is forcing her colleagues to choose sides after Democratic leaders announced they'd provide the votes to save the Republican speaker’s job. Speaking outside the Capitol on Wednesday, Greene railed against Republican Party leaders and pushed back against public entreaties from Donald Trump and others to avoid another messy political fight so close to the November election. With Greene was Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, one of the few lawmakers to join her effort. They said Johnson isn't up to the job. Johnson responded that the attempt to oust him is “wrong for the country.”

Americans have a message for news organizations as they prepare to cover the 2024 election: About half of Americans say they're concerned that outlets will report inaccuracies or misinformation. Roughly 4 in 10 say they're worried about outlets using generative artificial intelligence to write election news. Attitudes toward the media and political news ahead of the election were explored in a poll from the American Press Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Press Institute CEO Michael Bolden says the poll results show news organizations need to let people know more about their role in the community to build trust.

U.S. stocks finished mixed after the head of the Federal Reserve said the cuts to interest rates that Wall Street craves so much are still likely, even if they’re delayed because of stubbornly high inflation. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% Wednesday after seeing a big afternoon rally evaporate. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite lost 0.3%. On the downside for financial markets, the Fed’s chair said inflation is taking longer than expected to get under control. But he also said its next move is unlikely to be a rate hike, and the Fed announced moves to stabilize the bond market.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with Israeli leaders in his push for a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas to impress on them that “the time is now" for an agreement that would free hostages and bring a pause in the nearly seven months of war. The current round of talks appears to be serious, with Hamas considering a new proposal. But the sides remain far apart on the key issue of whether the war should end as part of an emerging deal. In talks with Blinken, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his determination to carry out an offensive on the southern Gaza town of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.

Workers and activists around the world are marking May Day with largely peaceful rallies against rising prices and calling for greater rights. Pro-Palestinian sentiments are also on display. Police in Istanbul fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of people who tried to reach the main Taksim square in defiance of a ban. In Paris, some workers set makeshift Olympic rings on fire. In South Korea's capital, thousands of protesters expressed frustration with the government. In Lebanon, people sought the end to a miserable economic crisis. “Tax the rich,” one banner in Germany read. “I want to live, not survive,” read one in France.
