German tennis legend Boris Becker has been discharged from bankruptcy court in London after a judge found he had done “all that he reasonably could do” to repay his creditors. High Court Judge Nicholas Briggs said in a ruling Wednesday that it would be “perverse” not to end the case. Creditors say Becker still owed about 42 million pounds ($52.5 million) over an unpaid loan of more than 3 million pounds ($3.75 million) on his estate in Mallorca, Spain. Becker served 8 months in a London prison for illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding 2.5 million pounds ($3.1 million) from bankruptcy trustees.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she'll call a vote next week on ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson. The Georgia Republican is forcing her colleagues to choose sides after Democratic leaders announced they'd provide the votes to save the Republican speaker’s job. Speaking outside the Capitol on Wednesday, Greene railed against Republican Party leaders and pushed back against public entreaties from Donald Trump and others to avoid another messy political fight so close to the November election. With Greene was Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, one of the few lawmakers to join her effort. They said Johnson isn't up to the job. Johnson responded that the attempt to oust him is “wrong for the country.”

For a brief period this month, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is bringing together a trifecta of entertainment across both of its theme parks. United Methodist delegates have repealed their church’s longstanding ban on LGBTQ clergy with no debate. They removed a rule forbidding “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” from being ordained or appointed as ministers. Delegates voted 692-51 at their General Conference — the first such legislative gathering in five years. That overwhelming margin contrasts sharply with the decades of controversy around the issue. Past General Conferences of the United Methodist Church had steadily reinforced the ban and related penalties amid debate and protests. But many of the conservatives who had previously upheld the ban have left the denomination in recent years, and this General Conference has moved in a solidly progressive direction.

Workers, activists and others around the world are marking May Day with rallies against the global pressure of rising prices and calling for greater rights. Pro-Palestinian sentiments are also on display. Not all was peaceful. Police in Istanbul fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of people who tried to reach the main Taksim square in defiance of a ban. In Paris, some workers set makeshift Olympic rings on fire. In South Korea's capital, thousands of protesters expressed frustration with the government. In Lebanon, people sought the end to a miserable economic crisis. “Tax the rich,” one banner in Germany read.

Drone footage exclusively obtained by The Associated Press shows months of Russian artillery pounding have devastated a strategic city in eastern Ukraine. Chasiv Yar is a strategic high ground, and capturing it would set the stage for a potentially broader Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine that Ukrainian officials say could come as early as this month. The footage shows a skeletal ghost town, with few residents left. Apartment blocks are reduced to charred facades, and streets are pockmarked with massive craters. The destruction is reminiscent of what remained of Bakhmut and Avdiivka that Ukraine gave up after months of bombardment.
