Illinois big Coleman Hawkins entered the transfer portal Tuesday while preparing for the upcoming NBA draft. The 6-foot-10 Hawkins could still choose to withdraw from the draft and use his fifth and final year of NCAA eligibility. Players have until Wednesday to enter the portal. "My intention is 100% to stay in the draft and I am fully focused on that process," Hawkins wrote on social media Tuesday. "I wanted to make sure I take every opportunity to protect myself in case of injury or any other unforeseen circumstances down the road. "With the recent NCAA rule change regarding grad transfers, and the May 1 deadline approaching, entering the portal gives me the best chance to protect myself in those instances and maximize my opportunities as I go through the pre-draft process." Hawkins scored a career-high 12.1 points per game while adding 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 blocks over 35 games (all starts) this past season. He shot a career-best 36.9 percent from 3-point range and was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention. In 126 games (82 starts) for Illinois over four seasons, Hawkins has contributed 7.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Also Tuesday, Illinois secured a transfer commitment from Evansville forward Ben Humrichous. In his first season of Division I basketball, Humrichous put up 14.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 41.4 percent from deep. --Field Level Media

Large numbers of New York City police officers have begun entering the Columbia University as dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters remained on the campus. The scene unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday as police, wearing helmets and carrying zip ties and riot shields, massed at the Ivy League university’s entrance.  Demonstrators had occupied Hamilton Hall hours earlier Tuesday after setting up an encampment earlier in the month. The demonstrators say they are on the campus to oppose Israeli military action in Gaza and demand that the school divest from companies they claim are profiting from the conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to launch an incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are sheltering from the almost 7-month-long war. Netanyahu’s comments came hours before U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Israel to advance the truce talks that appear to be one of the most serious rounds of negotiations between Israel and Hamas since the war began. The deal is meant to free hostages, bring some relief to the population and avert an Israeli offensive into Rafah and the potential harm to civilians there.

Haiti’s newly installed transitional council has chosen a little known former sports minister as the Caribbean country’s prime minister, as it tries to establish a stable new government amid stifling violence. Fritz Bélizaire was chosen in a surprise move to replace current interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert. Bélizaire gained the support of four of the seven voting members on the nine-member panel but with other panel members saying they were unfamiliar with him.  The council also planned to choose a Cabinet as it seeks to quell gang violence that is choking the capital, Port-au-Prince, and beyond. Heavy gunfire was reported in several of the capital’s neighborhoods during the council’s meeting.
