Brazil will host the 2027 Women’s World Cup after a vote of FIFA’s full membership chose the South American bid over a joint proposal from Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. The FIFA Congress on Friday selected from a reduced field of two candidates to host the 2027 tournament after a joint bid by the United States and Mexico was pulled late last month and South Africa withdrew its candidacy in November. It was the first time that all 211 of FIFA’s members associations had the opportunity to weigh in on the host of the women’s tournament. Previously, it was decided by the FIFA Council. Brazil will be the first South American country to host the event.

Trucks carrying badly needed aid for the Gaza Strip have rolled across a newly built U.S. pier and into the besieged enclave for the first time. Friday's shipment is the first in an operation that American military officials anticipate could scale up to 150 truckloads a day. It comes as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting hindered the delivery of food and other supplies seven months into the Israel-Hamas war. But the U.S. and aid groups warn that the floating pier project is not a substitute for land deliveries that could bring in all the food, water and fuel needed in Gaza. Before the war, more than 500 truckloads entered the territory on an average day.

The Israeli military says dozens of Israeli protesters in the occupied West Bank attacked a truck in an apparent attempt to prevent aid from reaching Gaza, beating its driver and setting it on fire. Trucks carrying badly needed aid for the Gaza Strip rolled across a newly built U.S. floating pier into the besieged enclave for the first time on Friday as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting hinder food and other supplies reaching people there. Israel will respond to charges of genocide at the U.N.’s top court, where South Africa is seeking emergency measures to halt Israel’s escalating offensive in Rafah, calling the incursion “the last step in the destruction of Gaza.”

Severe thunderstorms have hit southeastern Texas for the second time this month, and Houston's mayor says at least four people are dead. There also have been windows blown out of high-rise buildings, downed trees and power outages for more than 900,000 customers in the Houston area. The storms also moved into neighboring Louisiana and left more than 215,000 customers there without power. The storm system moved through swiftly Thursday, but flood watches and warnings remained Friday for Houston and areas to the east, including eastern Louisiana into central Alabama. Heavy storms slammed the Houston region during the first week of May, leading to numerous high-water rescues.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region aims to create a buffer zone but has no plans to capture the city. Speaking to reporters Friday on a visit to Harbin, China, Putin said that Moscow has launched attacks in the Kharkiv region in response to the Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod region. Russian authorities say a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea has caused power cutoffs in the city of Sevastopol and set a refinery ablaze in southern Russia. Friday's drone raids marked Kyiv’s attempt to strike back during Russia’s offensive in northeastern Ukraine.

Israel has strongly denied charges of genocide and has told the United Nations’ top court it is doing everything it can to protect the civilian population during its military operation in Gaza. The International Court of Justice wrapped up a third round of hearings on emergency measures requested by South Africa. It says Israel’s military incursion in Rafah threatens the “very survival of Palestinians in Gaza” and has asked the court to order a cease-fire. Israel defended its conduct and said it had allowed in fuel and medication to the beleaguered enclave as it takes “extraordinary measures in order to minimize the harm to civilians in Gaza.”

French police have shot and killed a man armed with a knife and a metal bar who is suspected of having set fire to a synagogue in the Normandy city of Rouen. Police officers who deployed discovered the man on the roof of the building, clutching the metal bar in one hand and the kitchen knife in the other, and smoke rising from the synagogue’s windows, the Rouen prosecutor said. He said the man threw the bar at the police before jumping off the roof and then running at an officer with his knife raised. The officer fired five shots, fatally wounding him. Tensions and anger have grown in France over the Israel-Hamas war, and antisemitic acts have surged.
