Former Florida guard Riley Kugel will not play for Kansas this season, CBS Sports reported Wednesday. Kugel committed to the Jayhawks on April 1, days after entering the transfer portal, but Kansas coach Bill Self said Monday that Kugel's future in Lawrence was "up in the air." The 6-foot-5 sophomore is now back to being recruited by high-majors, per the report. Kugel averaged 9.2 points and 3.5 rebounds and shot 39.4 percent from the field in 33 games (11 starts) this past season but lost his starting job in December. He was on the bench for both the semifinals and final of the SEC tournament. The Gators beat Texas A&M in the semis but lost to Auburn in the final. Kugel did play in Florida's 102-100 loss to Colorado in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals in 21 minutes. In 2022-23, Kugel averaged 9.9 points and 2.8 rebounds and shot 45.6 percent in 32 games (17 starts). He averaged 17.3 points over the final 10 games of the season and earned SEC All-Freshman honors. --Field Level Media

WEST DES MOINES — Many health risks — like sitting too much, eating unhealthy foods and smoking — can be avoided. Other health threats — like not being able to get certain prescription medicines — are out of our control and can wreak havoc.

The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are proud to announce the 15th Annual Iowa’s Best Burger Contest. Nominations will be taken from Monday, February 12 to Tuesday, March 12.

U.S. stocks are drifting as Wall Street remains in a lull. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1% Wednesday after a big three-day winning streak gave way to a tiny gain the prior day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 132 points, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Treasury yields rose in the bond market. Uber Technologies slumped after reporting worse results for the latest quarter than analysts expected. Shopify tumbled after giving a forecast for slowing revenue growth. Lyft and Arista Networks revved higher after topping expectations for profit and revenue.

The Washington, D.C., mayor and police chief say they decided to clear a pro-Palestinian encampment at George Washington University based on shifting information about increased threats to public safety. Police cleared the tent encampment Wednesday after dozens of protesters had left the site and marched to the university president's home. The Metropolitan Police Department says 33 arrests were made, including for assault on a police officer. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith were preparing to testify about the district's handling of the protest at a House hearing Wednesday afternoon before it was canceled. Bowser says the district's response to demonstrations is “rooted in public safety and responsibility.”

French Olympic swimmer Florent Manaudou became the first Olympic torch carrier in France after the Olympic flame arrived in the southern French city of Marseille marking another milestone in the lead-up to the Summer Games in Paris. A majestic three-mast ship carried the Olympic torch from Greece for the welcoming ceremony at sunset Wednesday in the city’s Old Port. The ship docked on the pontoon and Manaudou carried it to mainland France. The torch was lit in Greece last month before it was officially handed to France.

President Joe Biden has laced into Donald Trump over a failed project that was supposed to bring thousands of new jobs into southeastern Wisconsin. Now on that site, construction will start on a new data center from Microsoft, whose president credits the Biden administration’s economic policies. For Biden, it offers another point of contrast between him and Trump, who had promised a $10 billion investment by the Taiwan-based electronics giant Foxconn that never came. Biden said Wednesday that “Foxconn turned out to be just that — a con.” Republicans respond that Wisconsin voters have been hurt by inflation under the Democratic president's watch. Foxconn says its current Wisconsin operation “greatly contributes” to the company.

The Israeli military says it has reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza but a United Nations agency says no aid has yet entered. The key terminal for the entry of humanitarian aid was closed over the weekend after a Hamas rocket attack killed four Israeli soldiers nearby. An Israeli tank brigade seized the nearby Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt early Tuesday, and it remained closed. The limited incursion does not appear to be the start of the full-scale invasion of the crowded southern city that Israel has repeatedly promised. The U.S. has urged Israel not to launch a full-on assault on Rafah because it would worsen Gaza's humanitarian catastrophe, and it paused a shipment of bombs to its close ally last week over those concerns.
