Georgia is making Kirby Smart the highest-paid college football coach at a public school under a new contract announced Thursday. Smart, who led the Bulldogs to national championships in 2021 and 2022, agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2033 that will pay him a yearly salary of $13 million -- a $1.75 million annual raise -- and bonuses up to $1.55 million. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is due to make $11.5 million in 2024, according to reports. Smart, 48, is 94-16 in eight seasons at his alma mater, including 13-1 last season when a loss to Alabama for the Southeastern Conference championship kept the defending champion Bulldogs out of the College Football Playoff. Instead, Georgia played in the Orange Bowl, defeating Florida State to raise its mark to 9-2 in bowl games under Smart. He signed a 10-year contract in 2021 that totaled $112.5 million -- at the time the most lucrative deal. However, Swinney and Alabama's Nick Saban -- who retired after last season -- inked new contracts that surpassed the annual figure. Smart's new compensation was approved Thursday afternoon by an executive committee of the Georgia Athletic Association's board of directors. Athletic director Josh Brooks also received a pay increase to $1.275 million annually with a contract extension to 2030. Hired in January 2021, Brooks was making $1.025 million annually with yearly increases of $100,000. --Field Level Media

What would you do if you were given an extra day? How would you celebrate those extra moments? Would you start the day with a cup of coffee or a meditative walk watching the sunrise and ending with a great meal and a table full of loved ones at sunset? Would you make time to have lunch with …

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says the major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed for days around the area where a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95. The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut. The East Coast’s main north-south highway subsequently closed, causing major traffic jams. The crash caused damage to the bridge above it, which the governor said will need to be demolished and replaced. Lamont says the hope is to reopen the interstate by Monday morning.

Jurors in the hush money trial of Donald Trump have heard a recording of him discussing with his then-lawyer and personal fixer a plan to purchase the silence of a Playboy model who has said she had an affair with the former president. A visibly irritated Trump leaned forward at the defense table and jurors appeared riveted as prosecutors on Thursday played the September 2016 recording that attorney Michael Cohen secretly made of himself briefing his celebrity client on a plan to buy Karen McDougal’s story of an extramarital relationship. Testimony resumes Friday.

Police have arrested more than 2,000 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States in recent weeks. That's according to a tally by The Associated Press. Demonstrations and arrests have occurred in almost every corner of the nation. But in the last 24 hours, they’ve drawn the most attention at the University of California, Los Angeles, where chaotic scenes played out early Thursday as officers in riot gear surged against a crowd of demonstrators. The California Highway Patrol has said at least 200 people were arrested in the crackdown at UCLA.

Hamas says it's sending a delegation to Egypt as soon as possible to continue talks in the latest sign of progress in the fragile cease-fire process. The group’s supreme leader Ismail Haniyeh said Thursday he had spoken to Egypt’s intelligence chief and Hamas negotiators would travel to Cairo "to complete the ongoing discussions with the aim of working forward for an agreement.” But chances for the deal are entangled with the question of whether Israel can accept an end to the war without reaching its stated goal of destroying Hamas. The stakes in the cease-fire negotiations were made clear in a new U.N. report that said if the war in Gaza stops today it will still take until 2040 to rebuild.

Millions of voters in England and Wales have cast their ballots in an array of local elections. The voting on Thursday was the last big test before a U.K. general election that all indicators show will see the Conservative Party ousted from power after 14 years. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will hope he can point to some successes including in a couple of key mayoral races. That would douse talk that the Conservative Party will change its leader once again before the United Kingdom's main election. The leader of the main opposition Labour Party will be hoping that the party is on course to sweep to power for the first time since 2010.
