The NFL will release the full 2024 schedule on May 15 at 8 p.m. ET, according to media reports on Wednesday. Teams had been told informally that Thursday would be the release day but no reason was given for the delay in a league memo Wednesday afternoon, according to Sports Business Journal. Hans Schroeder, NFL executive vice president of media distribution, wrote in the memo that more details about the plan are expected in the coming days, Sports Business Journal reported. One explanation could be determining which games would be set for Dec. 25, which this year falls on a Wednesday. The league in late March changed its stance to allow playing Christmas Day games if the holiday was a Tuesday or Wednesday. The four teams involved would play in a doubleheader the preceding Saturday. Another possibility is the delayed release allows teams to better prepare for such a highly anticipated day with promotion on social media tied to single-game ticket sales. Or, the NFL could be stretching what is a one-night event into multiple days with game details staggered across multiple days, as the NFL draft has evolved. The teams and their fans already know the opponents on their home and road schedules but not the order, dates and times. Locked in are five international games for five teams, with most dates and all times to be determined: In Sao Paulo, Brazil, Green Bay Packers vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Sept. 6; London, Minnesota Vikings vs. TBD, Chicago Bears vs. TBD and Jacksonville Jaguars vs. TBD; Munich, Germany, Carolina Panthers vs. TBD. Super Bowl LIX is Feb. 9, 2025 at the Superdome in New Orleans. --Field Level Media

House Speaker Mike Johnson called an effort to oust him from his speakership by hardline Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene 'a misguided effort' following an overwhelming 359-43 vote in his favor.
Severe storms have torn through the central and southeast U.S., spawning damaging tornadoes, producing massive hail, and killing one person in Tennessee and another in North Carolina when trees toppled onto their vehicles. Wednesday afternoon, a tornado emergency was issued for an area south of Nashville. That is the National Weather Service's highest alert level. The weather service says at least eight tornadoes touched down Tuesday in Ohio, including five in the state’s southwest region. Weather service meteorologist in Michigan Nathan Jeruzal says that the three confirmed tornadoes there had touched down in the southwestern part of the state.
Hardline Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the vote to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, but lawmakers have quickly rejected it. Greene of Georgia pressed ahead Wednesday with her long-shot effort despite pushback from Republicans at the highest levels who are tired of the political chaos. Donald Trump, his leader of the Republican National Committee and other Republicans have warned Greene off the effort. But Greene, who is one of Trump’s biggest supporters in Congress, wants to rebuke Johnson after the passage of a foreign aid package with funds for Ukraine as it fights Russia. Democrats led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York had said they would vote to table Greene's effort, essentially saving Johnson's job, for now.
President Joe Biden says he will not supply offensive weapons that Israel can use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah — the last major Hamas stronghold in Gaza — over concern for the well-being of the more than 1 million civilians sheltering there. Biden, in an interview Wednesday with CNN, says the U.S. is still committed to Israel’s defense and will supply Iron Dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms. But he says that if Israel goes into Rafah, “we’re not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used.” The interview marked Biden’s toughest public comments yet about the potential Israeli military operation and followed his decision to pause a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel last week.
STURTEVANT, Wis. (AP) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday laced into Donald Trump over a failed project in the previous administration that was supposed to bring thousands of new jobs into southeastern Wisconsin and trumpeted new economic investments under his watch that are coming to the same spot.
Israel says it reopened a key Gaza crossing after a rocket attack but the UN says no aid has entered
The Israeli military says it has reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza but a United Nations agency says no aid has yet entered. The key terminal for the entry of humanitarian aid was closed over the weekend after a Hamas rocket attack killed four Israeli soldiers nearby. An Israeli tank brigade seized the nearby Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt early Tuesday, and it remained closed. The limited incursion does not appear to be the start of the full-scale invasion of the crowded southern city that Israel has repeatedly promised. The U.S. has urged Israel not to launch a full-on assault on Rafah because it would worsen Gaza's humanitarian catastrophe, and it paused a shipment of bombs to its close ally last week over those concerns.
PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (AP) — As major floods engulfed entire cities in the northern part of the Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state last week, meteorologist Estael Sias knew the water would drain into capital Porto Alegre’s metropolitan region and that she would need to find a safe place.
Gaza’s overcrowded southernmost city, Rafah, has been thrown into panic and chaos by Israel’s seizure of the nearby border crossing with Egypt and as the possibility of a full-scale invasion looms. Tens of thousands of displaced and exhausted Palestinians have packed up their tents and other belongings, dragging families on a new exodus. The main hospital has shut down, leaving little care for people suffering from malnutrition, illnesses and wounds. And with fuel and other supplies cut off, aid workers have been scrambling to help a population desperate after seven months of war.
Tens of thousands welcomed the Olympic torch in the southern French city of Marseille, marking another milestone in the lead-up to the Summer Games in Paris. A majestic three-mast ship carried the Olympic torch from Greece for the welcoming ceremony at sunset Wednesday in the French city’s old port. The ship docked on a pontoon resembling an athletics track and French Olympic swimmer Florent Manaudou carried the torch to mainland France. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the ceremony. With the arrival of the Olympic torch, “the games are entering the lives of the French people,” Macron said. The torch was lit in Greece last month before it was officially handed to France.
Once again, the situation has arisen in a nearby school district.
