The New York Giants will make their "Hard Knocks" debut this year on the long-running HBO docuseries, the network announced Wednesday. "Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants" will premiere on July 2. The Giants are preparing for their 100th season. The franchise opting to take part in this series is a headline unto itself. After all, co-owner John Mara made his stance crystal clear to the New York Daily News back in 2010. "That announcement will come," Mara said at the time, "when I'm next to my father in the Gates of Heaven cemetery." Well, Mara is still alive and "Hard Knocks" is calling as the Giants prepare for their centennial season. This five-part series marks the first time "Hard Knocks" has chronicled a team throughout the offseason, including free agency and the draft. The series previously has documented NFL training camps, the preseason and regular season. "We are beyond thrilled that the New York Giants have opened their doors to the Hard Knocks cameras for the first time ever," HBO executives Nancy Abraham, Bentley Weiner and Lisa Heller said in a statement. "The NFL offseason is a fascinating period that we've always wanted to explore and we can't wait to show football fans everywhere what NFL Films has been capturing behind the scenes at the team's headquarters." --Field Level Media

Some social media users are calling out celebrities for what they say is inaction in the face of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza — and they’ve taken to a “blockout” to pressure the stars to take a stand. For the blockout, users put a block on seeing any and all content from the accounts of certain celebrities on social media platforms including X, TikTok and Instagram. Some have posted about the celebrities they’ve blocked. Others have shared posts from users lambasting attendees of high-glamour events like the Met Gala and contrasting it with the situation in Gaza. Blockout participants say it’s a protest because the celebrities either haven’t spoken up or haven’t said enough against Israel’s actions in Gaza during its war with Hamas.

A bipartisan group of four senators led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is recommending that Congress spend at least $32 billion over the next three years to develop artificial intelligence and put safeguards around it. The group writes in a report released Wednesday the U.S. needs to “harness the opportunities and address the risks” of the quickly developing technology. The senators say they sometimes disagreed on the best paths forward but they eventually found consensus on policy recommendations included in the 33-page report because they felt the stakes were so high.

A man with a long record of dangerous driving has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence-manslaughter in the deaths of eight Mexican farmworkers in Florida. Bryan Maclean Howard remains jailed Wednesday without bond for Tuesday’s crash. The Florida Highway Patrol says the 41-year-old drove his pickup into the center line on a two-lane road and sideswiped a farmworker bus, causing it to veer off the road, strike a tree and flip over. Court documents detailing what substance Howard allegedly took are sealed. Howard told a judge he’s a self-employed painter and drywall installer with $700 in the bank.

A massive search is underway in France for a gang that killed two prison officers and seriously injured three others to free an inmate they were escorting. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says “unprecedented” efforts are being deployed, with hundreds of officers mobilized. The violence has shocked France. Prison workers have held moments of silence. Prosecutors say the escaped convict, Mohamed Amra, 30, has a long criminal record. International policing agency Interpol issued a Red Notice to find him.

Slovakia’s populist prime minister has been shot multiple times and gravely wounded after a political event. The attempted assassination shocked the small country and reverberated across Europe. Robert Fico, who is 59, was reported to be fighting for his life after being hit in the stomach. The government said at least four shots were fired outside a cultural center in the town of Handlova, nearly 140 kilometers (85 miles) northeast of the capital, where Fico was meeting with supporters. Officials said a suspect was in custody. Fico was taken by helicopter to a hospital. The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fending off criticism that he is not planning for a postwar reality in the Gaza Strip, saying it's impossible to prepare for any scenario in the embattled Palestinian enclave until Hamas is defeated. Netanyahu has faced increasing pressure from critics at home and allies abroad, especially the United States, to present a postwar plan for Gaza. Meanwhile, Palestinians are marking the 76th anniversary of mass expulsion from what is now Israel in the war surrounding the country’s creation in 1948. More than twice the number expelled have been displaced within Gaza in this war.
