Brazil will host the 2027 Women’s World Cup after a vote of FIFA’s full membership chose the South American bid over a joint proposal from Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. The FIFA Congress on Friday selected from a reduced field of two candidates to host the 2027 tournament after a joint bid by the United States and Mexico was pulled late last month and South Africa withdrew its candidacy in November. It was the first time that all 211 of FIFA’s members associations had the opportunity to weigh in on the host of the women’s tournament. Previously, it was decided by the FIFA Council. Brazil will be the first South American country to host the event.

Australian professional soccer has been rocked by accusations that the captain of A-League club Macarthur FC paid two younger teammates up to 10,000 Australian dollars ($6,600) to deliberately receive yellow cards in a scheme set up by a South American gambling connection. Macarthur team leader Ulises Davila and fellow players Kearyn Baccus and Clayton Lewis were arrested by police Friday over their alleged involvement in the match-fixing scheme. Authorities still want to interview a fourth player allegedly involved in the scheme and have threatened to extradite him if he does not return to Australia to face questioning.

The Israeli military said dozens of Israeli protesters in the occupied West Bank attacked a truck in an apparent attempt to prevent aid from reaching Gaza, beating its driver and setting it on fire. Trucks carrying badly needed aid for the Gaza Strip rolled across a newly built U.S. floating pier into the besieged enclave for the first time Friday as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting hinder food and other supplies reaching people there. Israel will respond to charges of genocide at the U.N.’s top court, where South Africa is seeking emergency measures to halt Israel’s escalating offensive in Rafah, calling the incursion “the last step in the destruction of Gaza.”

Severe thunderstorms have hit southeastern Texas for the second time this month, and Houston's mayor says at least four people are dead. There also have been windows blown out of high-rise buildings, downed trees and power outages for more than 900,000 customers in the Houston area. The storms also moved into neighboring Louisiana and left more than 215,000 customers there without power. The storm system moved through swiftly Thursday, but flood watches and warnings remained Friday for Houston and areas to the east, including eastern Louisiana into central Alabama. Heavy storms slammed the Houston region during the first week of May, leading to numerous high-water rescues.

French police have shot and killed a man armed with a knife and a metal bar who is suspected of having set fire to a synagogue in the Normandy city of Rouen. French police said officers were alerted early Friday morning that smoke was rising from the synagogue and came face to face with the man when they got there. The national police information service said the man surged toward officers with a knife and a metal bar and that an officer opened fire, fatally wounding the man. Rouen's mayor said the man is thought to have climbed onto a trash container and thrown “a sort of Molotov cocktail” inside the synagogue. Tensions and anger have grown in France over the Israel-Hamas war, and antisemitic acts have surged.

A protester shouting “liars” has briefly interrupted a hearing at the United Nations’ top court as Israel was defending its military operation in Gaza. The session at the International Court of Justice was paused for less than a minute while security guards escorted a woman from the public gallery. The court in The Hague in the Netherlands was holding a third round of hearings on emergency measures requested by South Africa, which wants the court to order a cease-fire in Gaza. Israel told the court on Friday that South Africa’s case “makes a mockery of the heinous charge of genocide.” Israel says it “takes extraordinary measures in order to minimize the harm to civilians in Gaza.”
