SMU is getting closer to landing Southern California basketball coach Andy Enfield, multiple sources reported. Enfield has been the Mustangs' sole target since they fired Rob Lanier on March 21, a day after they lost a first-round game in the NIT to Indiana State 101-92, according to ESPN. After ESPN identified Enfield as a "person of interest" on Tuesday, AM-570 radio in Los Angeles reported that the coach was taking the SMU job. Wednesday's report from ESPN indicated that the deal might not be finalized for a few days, although SMU had not reached out to any other candidates. Enfield, 54, just concluded his 11th season at USC. Several key players missed time with injuries as the Trojans finished the season 15-18. They were drubbed by Arizona in the Pac-12 Conference quarterfinals. Enfield is 220-147 at USC, with five NCAA Tournament appearances. The Trojans reached the Elite Eight in the 2020-21 season. He previously coached at Florida Gulf Coast, guiding the 15th-seeded Eagles to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 in 2013. SMU, which finished 20-13 this season, will move to the Atlantic Coast Conference next season and reportedly wants a high-profile hire. The Mustangs, who went just 10-22 in 2022-23, lost seven of their last eight games this season, and Lanier was let go after two seasons at the school. The Mustangs have not made the NCAA Tournament since losing in the first round in 2016-17. --Field Level Media

A fundraiser for President Joe Biden in New York City that also stars Barack Obama and Bill Clinton has raised a whopping $25 million. His campaign said the event sets a new record for the most-ever haul for a single political event. The Radio City Music Hall fundraiser on Thursday provides a gilded exclamation mark on a recent burst of campaign travel by Biden, who visited several political battlegrounds in the last few weeks. Biden has a significant fundraising advantage over Donald Trump, with more than four times as much cash on hand by the end of February.

An international team of doctors was prepared for the worst before visiting a hospital in central Gaza. The doctors were nevertheless stunned by the gruesome impact that Israel’s war against Hamas is having on Palestinian children. One toddler died from a brain injury caused by an Israeli strike. His cousin, an infant, is still fighting for her life. These gut-wrenching casualties were described to The Associated Press by Tanya Haj-Hassan, a pediatric intensive care doctor from Jordan. She was part of a seven-doctor team that recently finished a two-week stint in Gaza, whose hospitals have been devastated by the war that began on Oct. 7.

As Yemen’s Houthi rebels continue to target ships in a Mideast waterway, satellite pictures analyzed by The Associated Press show what appears to be a new airstrip being built at an entrance to that crucial maritime route. No country has publicly claimed the construction taking place on Abd al-Kuri Island, a strip of land rising out of the Indian Ocean near the mouth of the Gulf of Aden. However, images shot for the AP show workers have spell out “I LOVE UAE” with piles of dirt next to the runway, an abbreviation for the United Arab Emirates. The gulf and the Red Sea to which it leads have become a major battleground between the Houthis and U.S.-led forces as Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip rages.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.2%, and the Nasdaq composite added 0.5%. The Dow and Nasdaq closed just short of their own records.
